Representatives for Saul Niguez are expected to arrive in the United Kingdom on Monday in an attempt to resolve the confusion surrounding the midfielder's future.
The 26-year-old has been with Atletico Madrid since he was 14, but his time in the Spanish capital appears to be coming to an end this summer.
According to the Mirror, Saul's next stage of career will be in England after Atletico Madrid given his team permission to negotiate a transfer away from the club.
Manchester United are in pole position to add to a summer window that has already seen them sign Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, but they will be up against Liverpool for the midfielder's signing.
According to reports, the Spaniard wants his future resolved within the next few weeks, before the start of the league seasons in England and Spain.
While Saul's buyout clause at Atletico Madrid is £128 million, a fee in the range of £40 million seems more reasonable given the club's financial difficulties.
He signed a new nine-year contract with Diego Simeone's club in 2017, but it appears he may leave before the contract's midway point.
Saul is one of Atletico's highest-paid players, and he has recently been courted by Barcelona and Juventus. There have been talks about him perhaps being involved in a swap deal that would see Antoine Griezmann return to Atletico Madrid.
The Spaniard has a La Liga title, which he won last season with Atletico Madrid, as well as two Europa Leagues and a Champions League runners-up medal from the 2016 final loss to Real Madrid.
Liverpool are unlikely to make a move for Saul until they sell a midfielder, whilst United are awaiting a bid from PSG for Paul Pogba and are leading the race to sign the Atletico Madrid player.
