After a 2-0 loss to newly promoted Brentford on Friday, Mikel Arteta conceded his Arsenal team were 'not good enough.'
In the first match of the new Premier League season, the Gunners were defeated 2-0 at a noisy Brentford Community Stadium.
After a lackluster performance, Arteta admitted to Sky Sports that the team's performance was insufficient, before apologizing to their fans.
'I'm disappointed,' he said. We didn't want to start the season this way. We didn't get off to a good start, conceding a goal in a one-off event. Second balls and lengthy balls were difficult for us to handle. And it was all they needed to cause us issues. Then, after a long throw, we yielded.
Our main concern was our threat in front of goal.' We were around the box a lot and got into some nice situations, but there wasn't enough threat or shoots on target. In the Premier League, if you don't accomplish that, you won't win.'
Arsenal complained that the ball had gone off the pitch before the opener and that Bernd Leno had been fouled before the second goal, with Sergi Canos scoring in the first half and Christian Norgaard scoring after the break.
The north London side, on the other hand, could not pretend they deserved anything from the game, and while having more control, created little in attack aside from chances created by Emile Smith Rowe and Kieran Tierney on the left flank.
'I don't want excuses - we missed guys, but I don't want to hide,' Arteta continued. We lacked the ability to defeat them. We didn't do the fundamentals. We got off to a bad start, but we'll evaluate it, talk to some cool heads, and try to fix it as quickly as feasible.'
'First and foremost, thank you for your support of the club, especially the traveling fans who were here.' After that, I apologize for the outcome, and we are aware that we must do better. We have two important games coming up soon, and we need to put up a different show to obtain a different outcome.'
