Tammy Abraham has finalized his £34 million move to Roma

Tammy Abraham has finalized his £34 million move to Roma, signing a five-year contract and wearing the No 9 shirt for the Italian club. On Sunday, Abraham travelled in Rome for his medical, where he will now play under former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

Abraham's departure comes only days after Romelu Lukaku completed a surprise £98 million return to Chelsea, pushing the England forward in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

Abraham had been waiting for Chelsea's Premier League rivals Arsenal to express an interest, but Mourinho's vision for him in Italy eventually persuaded him.

'You can tell when a club is serious about you, and Roma made their intentions obvious right away,' Abraham remarked.

'Roma is a team that deserves to compete for championships and trophies. I've won important trophies before, and I'd like to do it again, so I'd like to assist this team in achieving that goal and advancing to the level where Roma belongs.

'It's a huge honour to be the No. 9 at this club, and I'm looking forward to getting started and contributing to the squad.'

On Saturday, Abraham was on the bench for Chelsea and waved goodbye to Blues fans as he departed the stadium with a luggage in tow after the club's 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

The deal with Roma is thought to have a £68 million buyback clause, and Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia stated that Abraham will always be welcome at the club.

'Tammy will always be welcomed back as one of our own at Stamford Bridge,' she said. 'We've all loved following his growth through our academy and into the first-team squad, and we appreciate his contribution to our senior and youth victories.'

'His numerous goals in a Chelsea shirt, as well as his role in our Champions League win last season, will be remembered forever.' I'm confident that all Chelsea fans will join me in wishing Tammy a long and prosperous career.' After allowing Edin Dzeko to join Inter Milan last week, Mourinho is expected to use Abraham as his main striker this season.

During Mourinho's second tenure at Stamford Bridge in 2015, Abraham was a member of Chelsea's youth program, although he did not play for the Special One.

Last season, under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, Abraham's playing time was limited, with the German later admitting that he did not place enough trust in the England man, which led to his troubles.

Abraham was promoted to the first team under previous manager Frank Lampard during a period when Chelsea were unable to add to their squad owing to an impending transfer ban.

Abraham made 47 appearances in all competitions for Lampard in the 2019-20 season, scoring 18 goals in the process.
